4 Ways to Savor Advent

The Christmas season is here in full force complete with 24/7 carols on the radio and lights in downtown Fort Wayne.
Yes, Christmas time is here…the church has traditionally called this time “advent” which means “coming”…but more importantly, the mood of the season is to be one of excitement, anticipation…waiting.  The goal is to help us look forward to Jesus’ coming just like all those people in the entire first half of the Bible.  They waited and looked forward to seeing the Messiah who would save them…most of them never got that chance on earth.  So in this season, it shouldn’t just be about lights and shopping and decorations.

IT’S ABOUT LOOKING FORWARD TO THE GOD WHO CREATED THE WORLD AND IS ALWAYS WITH US COMING AGAIN INTO OUR HEARTS TO TURN EVERYTHING UPSIDE DOWN…JUST LIKE HE DID IN BETHLEHEM.

IT’S ABOUT LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE MESSIAH, JESUS, COMING AGAIN TO EARTH.

So here are 4 ways to savor Advent/Christmas as we count down to the 24th…

  1. Advent Wreath: 1st Week Hope, 2nd Week Peace, 3rd Week Joy, 4th Week Love.  Light a candle and talk as a family (perhaps around the dinner table) about the theme for the week, (for example, where in your life you’re experiencing peace…or not) and so on.
  2. LISTEN to the story in the carols: Many of the Christmas carols tell the story of the almighty God smashing infinity down into the size of a baby…use the songs to guide your thoughts as you think about the miracle.
  3. Christmas Caroling: And share that with other people by singing.  This is crazy.  You can actually go up to your neighbor’s doors this time of year and SING about the savior Jesus AND MOST PEOPLE WON’T THINK YOU ARE NUTS!  It’s also a great way to build relationships with the people who live around you.
  4. Drive and see the lights: Again, some of the lights outside houses around you tell the story of Jesus coming to earth.

Well, that’s all for now…I hope you are able to step back over these next few weeks and reflect on God with us.
