Today, I misplaced my cell phone, wallet and keys.
I found them again in the course of the same day, but then I almost forgot to pick up my daughter’s friend for basketball practice even though my wife had reminded me as I walked out the door.
What can I say?
I’m a forgetful mess of a man.
My only consolation is that I’m not alone. I think a lot of us are forgetful. God’s people as a whole are fairly forgetful too. Over and over, God tells us not to forget. And what do we do? We forget.
But singing helps us remember.
When we sing, we remind each other that He is God and we are not. We reconnect our head knowledge with our heart’s passion. I think the song we are going to learn this weekend is a perfect example reminding us how much bigger, powerful, knowing and powerful he is. It starts with rhetorical questions…
Who has held the oceans in His hands?
Who has numbered every grain of sand?
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice
Of course the answer is that none of us has done these things. Thousands of years ago, Isaiah was telling God’s people this very thing…
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
Measured heaven with a span
And calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? -Isaiah 40:12b
This is the God we serve. He is worthy of our adoration and worship. Let’s not forget that he is seated on the throne of heaven as our King!
Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket…All nations before Him are as nothing,
And they are counted by Him less than nothing and worthless. -Isaiah 40:15a, 17
Onto the CHORUS…
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come let us adore Him
Behold our King nothing can compare
Come let us adore Him!
These four lines also come from Isaiah. BEHOLD!
Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” -Isaiah 40:9b
Continuing to the second verse, we move from the physical creation and nations to knowledge and understanding. And with this verse, we move to the book of Job where similar questions are asked…
Who is this who darkens counsel
By words without knowledge? -Job 38:2
Who has given counsel to the Lord?
Who can question any of His Words?
Who can teach the One who knows all things?
Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds?
Who has felt the nails upon His hands
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man?
God eternal humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior risen now to reign!
Do you remember? The amazing deeds of God culminate with Jesus who came to live a perfect life and die for the world. But that’s not all…this short verse reminds us that he rose again and now is risen to reign from Heaven. And that takes us to proclaim that he is King of all Kings and at the end of time, he will rule all of creation. Let us all remember and sing this message: he is God and we are not. He will reign forever and his glory will fill the earth…
Men: You will reign forever!
Women: Let Your glory fill the earth
